Description

My second attempt to work with professional fineliners. This time learning on how to illustrate insects with their different body sections and all the movable parts. It is more complicated, since one, the object is very small, so we need to constantly work with a binocular microscope and a drawing mirror that allows us to trace the outlines on paper whilst still seeing the image of the insect at the same time. Second the binocular needs adjustment all time, since most insects, especially beetles, are very threedimensional, so you need to adjust the focus for each section and put the insect in the right position to see all details. And third, you need to do each section/element of the insect separately and notice in what scale you drew it, in order to later on put it all together in the right scale and order. That some of the dried insects aren't in good shape is also a factor that takes more time.

Here I chose to draw Eupholus amalulu, a beetle of the Curculionidae family native in New Guinea. These very colorful and shiny weevils seem to be very loved by insect collectors for their looks and relatively big size. So I focused more on the structure of it's primary wings and the cavities on his head and torso exoskeleton, rather than try to draw every single hair and shiny scale on the beetle. Therefor it's a reduction with the focus on it's bulky built. I will however submit a colored version, since Eupholus amalulu got an indeed very pretty coloration worth showing =)
