Description

This is one or the works we had to do in order to learn how to handle our fine liners. Professional extremely thin and extremely expensive fine liners...
We had various objects to chose from and of course I chose the most complex thing I could find in our university's marine snail collection and that thing was the Venus comb murex (Murex pecten). Since it is obviously already very complex to the point it confuses the hell out of the viewer, I decided to make a linear illustration, focusing more on the outlines and the shell's structure, than shadows and texture that are better shown through points. I can tell you that it's way harder to draw a perfect straight line with the fine liner, than to ad a bazillion dots...

The Venus comb murex can be found in the Indo-Pacific and is the snail with the most spikes. The spikes are used as protection against predators and also prevent the snail from sinking into the soft mud and sand where she lives on. Since the Venus comb murex is a predatory snail, it is also speculated that the spikes on her long siphonal canal that form a small cage, allow the snail to feed on it's prey without being disturbed by scavengers trying to steal it's prey. It is also speculated that this cage on it's siphonal canal allow the murex to catch other snails she's chasing.
